Guess who came ashore? A nesting sea turtle!

Last week, just after sunset, a hush fell over the few people on the northern area of Long Caye as a sea turtle emerged from the surf. In the fading light, they watched in quiet awe as she hauled herself slowly up the sand, pausing now and then as if choosing the perfect spot. Then, with steady rhythm, she began to dig—flippers moving with a sense of deep, ancient purpose. They kept their distance, barely breathing, the only sound the soft scrape of sand shifting beneath her. It was a first for many, witnessing such a powerful and intimate moment of the reef’s natural rhythm. Everyone quietly moved away, allowing her to lay her eggs in peace. With help from Audubon caretakers from Half Moon Caye, we carefully documented the site and marked it for monitoring, but not before spending a moment in silent awe—imagining her under the moonlight, carrying out an ancient ritual, one grain of sand at a time. Moments like these remind us why we’re here: to protect, to observe, and to celebrate the wild stories still unfolding on this reef.
