Hover Fly

Hover flies, also known as flower flies or syrphid flies, belong to a diverse family of insects that can hover in place while flying. Often mistaken for bees or wasps because of their bright yellow and black coloration, hover flies are harmless to humans and play a crucial role in ecosystems. These insects act as important pollinators, frequently visiting flowers to feed on nectar and pollen. The larvae of hover flies also provide benefits, as many species feed on aphids, helping to control garden pests naturally. The hover flies on Lighthouse Reef adapt well to their environment, and their mimicry of stinging insects serves as a defense mechanism, deterring predators.
