Hermit crab

Hermit crabs are fascinating crustaceans that exhibit the unique behavior of inhabiting discarded shells. Unlike other crabs, hermit crabs have soft, exposed abdomens that need protection, so they use empty snail shells to shield themselves from predators and environmental elements. As they grow, they continuously seek larger shells and often compete with other hermit crabs for the best fit. Hermit crabs are omnivores that feed on plant material, small animals, and scavenged dead organisms. On Lighthouse Reef, they play an essential role in their ecosystems by breaking down organic material. Additionally, hermit crabs are social creatures that often live in large colonies, which helps them find new shells and food sources.
