Kayaking Around Long Caye: A Close Encounter with a Young Brown Pelican

Today, while kayaking around the beautiful perimeter of Long Caye, we had the privilege of spotting a Brown pelican nest. One youngster caught our attention, stretching up to watch us paddle by. This pelican, in that classic in-between stage from juvenile to adult, looked a bit awkward—still growing into its impressive gular pouch.

The gular pouch, that iconic flap of skin beneath the bill, is much more than just a fishing tool. It helps pelicans catch fish by acting like a net, but it also serves as a cooling mechanism, dissipating heat on warm days. Fun fact: this pouch can hold up to three times as much as the pelican’s stomach!

We couldn’t resist slowing down to snap a few pictures. Sharing these moments online feels like documenting nature’s version of teenage awkwardness—a relatable phase for all species, even pelicans!
