While moving lumber, we uncovered a small (young) lesser brown scorpion. So glad I was wearing gloves! There are a few hazards on Long Caye and this relatively small scorpion species with its brownish coloration and distinctive compact body structure is one of them. Although its venom can immobilize prey, it is generally not dangerous to humans, usually causing only mild, localized pain and swelling when it stings. Measuring around 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) in length as an adult, it hides during the day and becomes active at night to hunt for insects and other small invertebrates. We ended up preserving this guy in some alcohol, for use as an educational tool and to reduce the number of scorpions in the lumber pile.
