About Joseph Ho

Joseph Ho is a lifelong learner, explorer, and visual storyteller. He developed his outdoor skills at an early age through scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and serving as a Philmont trip leader. While studying engineering in upstate New York, he found respite from academics by honing winter survival skills through solo backpacking trips in the Adirondack High Peaks.

Engineering & Aerospace Career

As a career opto-mechanical engineer, Joseph has designed optical subsystems for multiple spaceflight climate science instruments, including the LIDAR receiver telescope on ICESAT2. Throughout his career, he has worked with premier aerospace organizations such as:

  • BAE Systems
  • General Dynamics
  • Ball Aerospace

He is also an early adviser for CisLunar Industries, a pioneering startup focused on the space-based recycling of essential materials.

Outdoor & Exploration Pursuits

Joseph’s commitment to skill development extends beyond engineering. A graduate of NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), he has expanded from hiking and backpacking into:

  • Multi-day ski tours
  • Extended 4WD expeditions
  • Private pilot training for navigating mountainous terrain in light aircraft

Photography & Storytelling

Beyond his technical and outdoor pursuits, Joseph is a dedicated photographer, using visual storytelling to share his travels, experiences, and scientific explorations with others. His ability to capture the beauty of remote environments and scientific missions makes him an invaluable contributor to Lighthouse Reef Research Repository (Lr³).
