The Queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) dazzles nature lovers in Belize with its vibrant orange wings adorned with striking black borders and white spots. While you can frequently see these butterflies fluttering through open fields, gardens, and forest edges on the mainland, spotting one on Long Caye is a rare and delightful treat!
Often mistaken for monarchs, Queen butterflies feature a darker hue and distinct patterns that set them apart. Both species rely on milkweed plants for survival, laying eggs on them to provide a crucial food source for their caterpillars. By ingesting milkweed, Queen butterflies also acquire toxins that deter predators, offering them a natural defense mechanism.
We’ll keep an eye out for more of the captivating Queen butterfly—a true jewel of the tropics!
