About Drew Cozzi
Drew Cozzi is a Research Associate for Lighthouse Reef Research Repository (Lr³), where he combines his military discipline with a deep curiosity for the natural world. His work supports Lr³’s mission to protect and understand one of the planet’s most vital marine ecosystems through field research, lab science, and immersive exploration.
Military & Early Career
Born and raised in York, Pennsylvania, Drew enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2016, pursuing a career in special forces. He served five years in the Airborne Infantry, including two years stationed in Vicenza, Italy, where he trained extensively across NATO territories and became proficient in a wide range of weapon systems. Later stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Drew served as a team leader, guiding soldiers through high-intensity training events and live-fire exercises. He continues to build on his leadership foundation through advanced military education courses.
Academic Journey
In August 2021, Drew transitioned from military life to higher education, relocating to Colorado State University to study Zoology—a field inspired by his lifelong love for animals and the desire to understand behavioral and ecological patterns. In 2024, he added Chemistry as a second major, drawn to the intellectual challenge and depth it offered in understanding the mechanics of life. Now thriving in both disciplines, Drew participates in multiple research labs each semester, laying the foundation for a career in environmental research and conservation science.
Lighthouse Reef Research Repository (Lr³)
At Lr³, Drew brings his field-readiness, scientific rigor, and personal passion to research initiatives focused on marine biodiversity and ecological restoration. He is especially drawn to Belize’s coral reef ecosystems, recognizing the ocean as Earth’s largest life-support system. Through applied chemistry and zoology, he is exploring natural ways to restore balance to damaged ecosystems—both marine and terrestrial.
Personal Life & Philosophy
Whether tracking rays underwater, running ridge lines, or perfecting a backcountry meal, Drew thrives at the intersection of action and reflection. His hobbies—cooking, gym workouts, hiking, hunting, fishing, snowboarding, and camping—mirror his drive to master both the physical and mental dimensions of his environment. As his partner Alora puts it, “Colorado had Drew’s name written all over it.” His post-military journey is about more than career—it’s about creating, discovering, and finding peace in wild places.
Drew’s unique mix of structure and spontaneity makes him a powerful force in any team—equal parts soldier, scientist, and soulful explorer.
