Cormorant enjoys the sunny skies

Neotropic Cormorants (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) are a frequent sight at Lighthouse Reef, gracefully plunging into the waters to hunt. These skilled diving waterbirds call this area home and seem unbothered by respectful human visitors.

With Tropical Storm Sara behind us, today’s calm and sunny weather is a welcome relief for all creatures, especially the cormorants. Clear skies improve visibility, making it easier for them to spot fish beneath the water’s surface. After a productive morning of hunting, this cormorant took a break on our boat, basking in the sun to dry off—a necessity since their feathers trade waterproofing for underwater agility.

Perched with a perfect view of the water, this bird reminds us why protecting their habitat is so important. Witnessing these incredible creatures thrive is a highlight of any visit to Lr3!
