Conservation peers to Lr³: OCEARCH

OCEARCH is a leading organization dedicated to the study and conservation of marine life, particularly large predators like sharks. Through its innovative tracking technology, OCEARCH enables scientists and the public to monitor the movements of tagged marine animals in real time. At Lighthouse Reef, OCEARCH has collaborated with local fishers, the Belize Fisheries Department, Georgia Aquarium, and Mote Marine Laboratory to tag and track sharks such as “Belekin,” a juvenile male silky shark. This collaborative approach not only provides valuable data for shark management but also offers alternative livelihoods for fishers, contributing to the conservation of shark populations in the region.

The OCEARCH Shark Tracker platform allows users to follow the journeys of these tagged animals, offering insights into their migratory patterns and behaviors. By engaging both the scientific community and the public, OCEARCH fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of marine ecosystems, aiding in the development of effective conservation strategies.
