About Us
Lighthouse Reef Research Repository (Lr³ “L-R-Cubed”) is a remote, field-based conservation hub situated on Long Caye, Belize — within the globally significant Lighthouse Reef Atoll. This living laboratory stands at the nexus of natural wonder and environmental challenge, where dynamic ocean currents bring both vibrant life and mounting threats.
At Lr³, our team is deeply engaged with the fragile ecosystem of Lighthouse Reef through real-time scientific observation and active intervention at our Outpost. Our programs encompass marine debris interception, mangrove restoration, climate and ocean monitoring, and the facilitation of cutting-edge research—all in pursuit of our mission and vision to preserve reef resilience in a rapidly changing world.
Though rooted in place, our mission resonates far beyond the atoll. Our team integrates satellite data, community-driven science, and open-access knowledge sharing into every aspect of our programs, helping to inform and empower regional reef management and conservation strategies on a global scale.
Our Commitment
- Safeguarding vulnerable habitats through targeted cleanup and ecosystem restoration
- Advancing understanding via continuous environmental monitoring and data synthesis
- Fostering stewardship by equipping researchers, local stakeholders, and visitors with tools to act
The conservation of Lighthouse Reef is inherently holistic. It encompasses not only the intricate flora and fauna but also the diverse human communities — fishermen, tour operators, resort managers, NGOs, and indigenous residents — whose livelihoods and cultures are entwined with the reef’s health. Lr³ recognizes that effective and enduring protection demands an inclusive approach that honors this interdependence.
Central to our engagement is the Citizen Science Initiative (CSI), which invites students, scientists, and conscientious travelers to participate directly in data collection and reef stewardship. This program exemplifies our belief that meaningful conservation emerges from collaboration, curiosity, and shared responsibility.
More than a research station, Lr³ is a dynamic platform where science, community, and conservation converge to safeguard one of the Earth’s most extraordinary marine ecosystems.
