A Legacy Preserved: The Carlson Family Gift to Science at Lr³
The Carlson Family Legacy: A Gift of Craft and Continuity
Lighthouse Reef Research Repository (Lr³) is deeply honored to receive an extraordinary donation from Bradley Carlson, representing a proud family tradition rooted in Colorado’s engineering and materials heritage.
The gift includes over 50 pieces of Coors laboratory porcelain, including crucibles, evaporating dishes, strainers, pestles and mortars, as well as rare, large, and specialty laboratory equipment carefully preserved over decades. Originally developed for Coors’ pioneering scientific operations, these instruments reflect the precision, craftsmanship, and innovation that defined the Carlson family’s connection to the company’s early technical work in Golden, Colorado.
Through Bradley Carlson’s generosity, these invaluable tools will now find renewed purpose in the hands of researchers and visiting scientists at Lr³ and Wendy’s Lab on Lighthouse Reef Atoll. What was once used in Colorado’s industrial laboratories will now serve marine and climate research at the very edge of the Caribbean—continuing the legacy of practical innovation and shared knowledge that began generations ago.

The estimated value of the donation is approximately $25,000–$35,000, reflecting both the rarity and functionality of the collection. With more than 50 specialized pieces—including crucibles, evaporating dishes, strainers, and pestles and mortars—along with large, specialty lab equipment, this gift represents decades of expert craftsmanship and engineering. Beyond its material worth, the collection is a priceless resource for ongoing scientific research, enabling experiments and studies exactly as these instruments were intended to be used.
Lr³ is profoundly grateful to Bradley Carlson and his family for entrusting us with this remarkable collection. The donation is more than labware—it is a legacy of science, care, and foresight, ensuring that these specialized tools continue to advance discovery, inspire inquiry, and serve the scientific community for generations to come.
The Carlson donation reminds us that the spirit of invention and the stewardship of thoughtful hands can endure across time and oceans, linking generations of makers, engineers, and scientists in a shared pursuit of understanding.
