We’ve been nurturing some red mangrove propagules, intending to transplant them in front. Mangrove, sea grass and reefs together create the incredible marine nursery that is Lighthouse Reef and this trifecta can be seen all across Caribbean reef areas. Maintaining healthy mangrove along the shoreline is essential for both a healthy ecosystem and for preventing beach erosion. At Lr3, we’re trying to respect the recommendations of environmental consultant Thomas Grimshaw, who in both 2001 and 2008, suggested peek-a-boo beaches as part of a development plan for Long Caye.
In August, we planted red mangrove propagules in buckets and have watched them sprout. Today, we planted one batch in the temporary planters we built for protection. Keep you posted on how they do!
