Lr³ Citizen Science Adventure 33
Title: Eco-Warrior Waste Challenge – Collect and Remove Ocean Debris
Join the Lr³ Eco-Warrior Waste Challenge, a Scuba Diving adventure where participants collect and remove ocean debris from Long Caye’s shores. This hands-on experience promotes marine pollution reduction and raises awareness about ocean health.
Embark on an important mission at Long Caye, where environmental stewardship meets adventure! This guided or self-guided challenge invites participants to explore the island’s peers and reef boundaries, collecting marine debris transported by ocean currents. Participants will learn about ocean trash accumulation, its sources, and its impacts on marine ecosystems. The focus is on removing debris rather than repurposing it. After collecting waste, all trash will be brought to a central location at the Lr³ outpost, where sorting and discussions will take place. A recycling worksheet will help participants categorize materials and understand waste management processes. By actively participating in waste reduction, you become a champion of the ocean, helping protect marine ecosystems and raising awareness about plastic pollution. This immersive experience offers insights into the broader impacts of marine debris on global ocean health, including its effects on marine food chains, habitat degradation, and microplastic formation.
Participants who complete the challenge will receive an Eco-Warrior Trash Cleanup Badge, which will be displayed on their donor listing on the Lr³ website.

Overview:
- Duration: Single day
- Level of Difficulty: Moderate (walking on uneven terrain, lifting debris)
- Best Time of Year: Year-round
- Gear Needed: Scuba Diving Gear, Gloves, reusable collection bags, water shoes, sun protection, hydration pack
- Guided or Self-Guided: Self-guided buddy teams or fully guided
- Time of Day: Morning and afternoon sessions
- Skills Needed: Basic physical fitness, teamwork, interest in conservation
- Group Size: 2+ participants
Itinerary:
- Journey Route: Shoreline and mangrove exploration along Long Caye, focusing on high-accumulation debris zones
- Mode of Transportation: Using the Lr³ CRRC to access remote areas and dive specifically to remove trash from the sea.
- Things to Contemplate: How does marine debris reach remote locations? How does individual action contribute to global conservation? What role do ocean currents play in the accumulation of debris? How does plastic break down into microplastics, and what are its ecological effects?
- Game Challenges: Competitive waste collection, data logging of debris types, identifying sources of pollution, scavenger hunt for unique debris items, team relay trash collection, fastest sorter competition
- Optional Worksheets & Maps: Debris identification guides, ocean current maps, waste audit forms, recycling worksheet
- Learning Objectives: Understand the impact of marine debris, analyze how plastics degrade over time and affect marine life, and engage in waste categorization and recycling processes
- Wrap-Up Summary: Participants bring all collected trash to the Lr³ outpost for sorting and analysis. Discussions will focus on findings, categorization of debris, and recycling options. Participants will reflect on their experience and share insights on how to reduce marine pollution. Certificates of participation and eco-warrior badges will be awarded to those who complete the challenge. Their achievement will also be recognized with an Eco-Warrior Trash Cleanup Badge displayed on their donor listing on the Lr³ website.
