Spotting a Palm warbler brightens a blustery day

“It’s a blustery day, but at least it’s warm!” remarked this visiting Palm Warbler (Setophaga palmarum), perched with us on the dock. This non-breeding adult, taking a moment to enjoy the view of building clouds across the water, is one of many migratory songbirds that grace Lighthouse Reef during their journey from North America.

Palm Warblers are a delight to observe, with their distinctive tail-wagging behavior and flashes of yellow plumage. Whether foraging for insects or snacking on mangrove berries, these little birds bring life and color to the mangroves and shorelines. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike can’t help but smile when spotting these cheerful visitors, a true highlight of Belize’s diverse wildlife.
