Today we took advantage of the calm weather and kayaked out to the reef’s edge. The rocks create small tide pools and the shallow water houses entire, miniature coral reef systems! There’s always something magical to be found in 6 inches of water out here. Sure enough, a peacock flounder was actively hunting small fish and crustaceans, using its quick reflexes to capture unsuspecting prey, when I startled him. Its body is uniquely adapted, with both eyes situated on one side, allowing it to maintain a clear view of its environment while lying flat on the ocean floor. This flatfish is known for its vibrant, colorful appearance and remarkable ability to blend into its surroundings so I was lucky to grab a pic of him since they’re such masters of disguise. Can’t find him? He has grey spots all along his perimeter!
